Why I Love Groundhog Day
Rather than Thanksgiving or July 4th, I count the days to February 2nd.
I wish I had a memorable story about why I love Groundhog Day. But I think it’s mostly because I like a running joke, a long payoff, and the moment that Bill Murray says, “and it’s always February 2nd, and there’s never anything I can do about it.” I’ve tweeted that quote on the second day in February every year since 2012. The one time my then-boyfriend-now-husband and I got it together to do holiday cards, we made Groundhog Day cards and sent each recipient three different versions of the card at different, spaced-out times, so they just kept receiving them, over and over. When we got engaged, we reprised the gag for our save the dates.
This year, the repetitive nature of pandemic life, combined with the doldrums of winter, make it the perfect time to ground ourselves in something light-hearted. There’s no stress around GHD, no pressure. High whimsy, low risk. The exact thing that we need when every day seems just like the last.
But it’s also a great way to talk about our systems. At WOTW, we do the same thing, week in and week out, using our process to build brand new sites for all kinds of different clients. Does that seem kind of magic? Kind of unbelievable? Well, sure. But we’re also letting a rodent play weatherman one day a year, so clearly we’re all open to the unexpected.
