Gotta Have My Vibes
We are out here in the real world and on the world wide web, and though each of those spaces hold very different experiences (hugs vs likes, high-fives vs follows), they both have one thing in common: reliance on the vibes.
Think about it. When you’re window shopping or looking for a restaurant, what draws you in? Is it the window display? A delicious/beautiful smell wafting from the doorway? Do the people inside look interesting or like you may have something in common? Is there good music playing? When you’re at a house party, why do you stay? Are you having good conversations? Is there lots of good stuff to drink or eat? These components can make or break an experience — you’ll either engage and form a new relationship, or you’ll cruise right by and find your vibes elsewhere.
The same principles above are applicable to online interactions (though I’ve yet to experience smell/taste via my browser, I don’t doubt this technology is coming our way). When surfing sites, what captures your attention? Is there a sleek design? Intuitive navigation? Innovative features? A welcoming tone in the content? As you scroll social media, what profiles do you pause on? Those with relatable or aspirational stories? A lively/supportive comments section?
Both websites and world sites (a new term for live interaction spaces that I just made up, please enjoy) have only a small fragment of time to either resonate with you or leave you cold, which means good vibes are non-negotiable. When you find them, amplify them! You, too, play a part in the feeling of a place, digital or otherwise. When you can’t find those good vibes, move right along. Or, maybe take the hint that there’s an opportunity for you to create something new.
