In Defense Of Leaving It All Out There

I spend a lot of time on the internet, just like the rest of us. The  majority of my time is spent building, but my favorite time is spent wandering. Much like I love to putz in real life, I love to see which various rabbit holes the internet will take me down. This series is specifically about design trends and using our own agency to implement them, in both a personal and professional capacity.

This week I’m hyper-fixated on the idea of receipts. I love how long and drawn out they are, unafraid of sparing us any details. I’ve noticed a trend in editorial design lately that has dripped into the more Brutalist side of the internet and I want to share some of my favorites:

I love this design because it gives us a glimpse into the process. SHOW ME those iterations. A stream of thought offered as the final feels so gossipy in the best way. I couldn’t manage to find the original, but the are.na link is here.

Resumes! They, too, can be sexy. This layout is something I think about often. I love the way the information is organized and, although a lot, it’s begging to be consumed.

Studio Otto is constantly finding its way to the top of my bookmarks. I refer to this site often because of its balance of simplicity and loudness. It lays a lot of information out in a way that feels fresh and makes you want to keep exploring. A classic for a reason.

Another copy-heavy beauty I would LOVE to see digitized. The typography alone evokes all kinds of feelings but the scattered nature of the layout feels like an organized chaos I can get behind. Again, it feels mildly stream of consciousness.

OOF this one has it all. Enough white space to breathe. A lot of work all at once. It feels playful and serious at the same time, a rare but greatly appreciated balance. Although it’s not as text-heavy, you get that 1000-foot view that gives you a special look into all the work at once.

All in all, there’s an appeal to letting people in on your process. Tell them everything or show them what you’ve got. The internet is constantly evolving. Preserve your moment and change as you see fit.
