Joyfully Ambitious: Brittani Millington

One of the biggest challenges for an entrepreneur is to take the brilliant ideas in your brain and translate them into a brand that people will want to use/buy/enjoy/engage with. It’s an enormous task — and also essential to the success of your business.

Enter Brittani Millington. As the brains behind Studio 113, Brittani works with entrepreneurs on everything from creative strategy to brand identity to social media to package design, bringing these ideas into the world in a way that leaves a mark.

Her goal is to help others achieve their dreams. And because she believes that success doesn’t come without steady evaluation, she created the Business Growth Journal, a strategic tool to help entrepreneurs track progress, make informed decisions and, most importantly, celebrate their achievements.

Here, Brittani gives us a closer look at Studio 113 and her creative process. Remember to schedule those breaks!

Was there a moment when you knew you were on the right path or in the right field?

I knew I was in the right field by the feeling I first got seeing my work in the wild and knowing that I did that. The other feeling is the high I get when a client loves the work I did for them. Getting that text or email is the best feeling!

How do you handle self-doubt?

Not well all the time. But over time it's gotten better. I practice positive talk and use the journal I created to help me battle self-doubt.

Is there a life or business mantra that you live by?

"The worst and best answer someone can say is no." Receiving the no can mean I don't work with someone or a brand that's not a good fit at the moment, and I can focus my energy elsewhere instead.

How do you find joy in moments of uncertainty?

I try my best to stick to a routine, funny as that sounds. It keeps my mind from wondering too much about the unknown because I'm focused on preplanned tasks. Also, I create breaks in my routines to do something fun or relaxing to just be in the moment, like hula hooping or a walk in the sun. On big breaks, I like to try a new restaurant for lunch.

Is there another woman in your field that you admire?

Right now it's Shauna Haider. She's been a mentor and just awesome to learn from.

What does community mean to you?

It means a group of like-minded people, real people, who want to see each other win and will help each other get there. They will cheer you on and support you. It's not a pressure-filled or judgmental environment, but one that allows you to grow and feel safe.

How do you cultivate community?

I try to be part of community small-business programs and organizations locally. I feel it's important to be involved on a local level, and through that I've worked with my city to put on educational branding workshops for small businesses. I also support small and local businesses, which to me means buying from them, communicating with them and sharing their brand with others.

What is your favorite part of your work?

Creating. When I'm zoned out and obsessing over the smallest details of whatever branding or website project I'm working on.

What is your favorite part of your day?

Right now, it's when I play with my daughter uninterrupted. It's a time where I have no choice but to have fun.

What inspires you?

That’s a hard one because I create through being inspired by a lot. I feel I can find the art in just about anything. Lately I've been watching people cook, and it’s always cool to see how simple ingredients can create so many dishes just by using them differently.
