The Intriguing Beauty of Imperfection

Ever since their inception, I’ve been watching Get Ready with Me (GRWM) videos. There’s something about the intimacy that I love. Most of the videos feel like I’m on the phone with a friend and they’re letting me in on some of their best kept secrets — the lip color that actually delivers a better than thou color, a skincare secret they’ve sworn by since middle school or a cherished eye shadow that’s been devastatingly discontinued.

When this concept transcends YouTube, it manifests in an undone form of graphic design. The cut outs aren’t meticulous. In fact, they’re sloppy, like inspiration cut from a magazine to make a collage at midnight. Or maybe a moodboard. The edges are sharp and they give a beautiful look into the thought process of the person cutting. Snip here but curve there.

The result feels like a secret. Something that isn’t as glossy as the social media we’ve come to know, but an intriguing result nonetheless.

Maybe this is my bias, but design that doesn’t follow the rules or feels rough around the edges sticks with me longer than something that’s too polished. It has a human nature to it that simply can’t be replaced.
