For any remote job, community is of the utmost importance. After all, you don’t see your colleagues on the daily. You don’t have lunch with them. You don’t even get the chance to just say hello when you sit down next to them.
So what’s an agency – with team members in HI, NY, and even Israel – going to do?
Make a Slack account. Or, if you’re in a more traditional industry, maybe it’s Microsoft Teams, in which case good luck because I heard it’s bugs galore. (Not that Slack is perfect, but….)
It’s how our little internal WOTW community stays in touch. Of course, each project has a dedicated Slack channel, and internal teams like marketing and ops have their own specific channels for their own initiatives. But the extent of our communication goes even further.
Whether it’s asking for support in #technical-questions, sharing news of what’s going on in each of our corners of the world in #random, or sending out a new completed site, a funny gif, or WHY ARE YOU WORKING IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY messages in #general, we do what we can to foster good vibes both in and out of the WOTW-sphere.
Thankfully, as a remote-based agency, not much has changed as far as meeting clients (shoutout to Google Meet) or getting in touch with agency partners (email always has its place). But in terms of replicating the water cooler or grabbing a quick meeting room, Slack works thanks to the modern technology of #general and Huddles.
So our community tends to reach far and wide, no matter where we are in the world. And I have to say, I know I’m not the only one that thinks it works perfectly for us.
