Al’s World Design Trends
EVERYBODY IS ONLINE. Many people are curating. I am adding my humble contribution to the masses, a bite-size list of my favorite design trends I’ve seen this year. Mallory jokes that she’s the CVO (Chief Vibes Officer) *positive* and I proudly embodied her mentality when doing research to narrow down the trends that bounced around in my head while I drifted off to sleep.You don’t think about web design before you go to bed? Well, time this right and that could change TODAY.
So, without any further ado, a list of design trends that feel especially delicious in the vastness of the internet.
We <3 a marquee
Print it on a T-shirt: WOTW loves movement. It always provides that — pop — that clients beg for. I could basically hear the collective sigh of relief when Squarespace added this as a native feature, too. Suddenly, an uphill battle becomes the sprinkles on top. Delish.
All about the navigation
The WOTW team unanimously gets most excited about a beautiful footer or navigation moment. It’s an attention to detail that elevates a site’s whole experience and ties it up nicely with a bow (referencing a very specific tax). The internet is generally overwhelming, and making these crucial interactions not only straightforward but also beautiful is like a reward for pacing through the vastness.
Bigger = better
The trend that really requires no introduction. More really is more.
Play time
From copy to interactivity, I loved seeing people really play with their designs. Throwing the rules out the window results in engaging design that begs you to explore more. I always tell my clients those who wander get rewarded and I firmly believe in the art of browsing. This inherent playfulness digs its heels in to contrast the hyper-digital status quo.
Sexy spreadsheets
I credit my obsessive math and science roots, but I’m the kind of person that gets a thrill from a pivot table or gorgeously executed function.These designs take that a step further without the hair pulling and PTSD that usually accompanies a sheet. It’s familiar without feeling stuffy.
