Developing Story: Justin Mabee

From bytes to bites, here’s what makes our developers tick.

Name: Justin Mabee

Current residence: Nashville, Tennessee

How did you get into web developing?

I got my start in Squarespace by doing live screen share calls with clients to help them fix issues with their site and make recommendations on how they could make their site better. I’ve always been a fan of good UI and UX, and Squarespace has a really great system that makes it easy for clients to update their sites themselves as they see fit.

Favorite WOTW site you’ve designed and why?

1301market.com was a lot of fun to put together because the team was from Philadelphia, where I’m originally from, and they allowed for a lot of great suggestions from me as a designer to make their site truly unique.

Where do you work best?

I work best in my home office, with two monitors, a mouse and a keyboard.

Workspace essentials?

iMac for all my every-day work; Superhuman for managing my email and keeping me at inbox zero; AirPods Max for noise-cancelling goodness; Huel Ready to Drink for pushing through lunch; some hot tea for those days when I’ve got a lot of back-to-back screen share calls; and my custom made Squarespace mug by my friend Chelsea Faith who uses Squarespace for her monthly mug drops!

Best learning resources?

DuckDuckGo is my friend keeping my web browsing private and searching for answers, but I explore the Squarespace Circle forums from time to time to learn new things. Also Christy Price’s blog!

Favorite Squarespace feature?

The new Portfolio Pages in Squarespace 7.1 make it super easy to build a quick portfolio of work in minutes, and keep everything creative!

Best source of creative inspiration?

Ghost Plugins, for sure. Cody is doing some amazing things over there and always giving me new ideas from the plugins and templates they’re creating. I also use the Webflow showcase often to get an idea of new and current trends in the web.

Favorite shortcut or tip of the trade?

I’ve started using AwesomeScreenshot a lot to take long screenshots of full website pages, or to record my screen quickly. After a few different platforms went to paid, they are still free and work universally on several different browsers.

What are you binge-watching?

Just got caught up with Servant on AppleTV+ from M. Night Shamalyan. It’s a creepy, strange show, but so well done and takes place in Philadelphia! I also have The Office on any time of the day when there’s downtime.

Favorite meal?

A Philly cheesesteak or anything Italian.

What are you hoping for in 2021?

Hoping to double my revenue over this year, and to be fortunate enough to start a family this year as well :) Bailey, my pit bull mix (pictured), is ready for some company.
