Fluid Engine: Why We Love It

A few of our talented Week of the Website developers share why they’re excited about the new Squarespace content editor.

“For years, we’ve had to say no when clients would ask us for certain features they’re familiar with from other design tools. It’s been hard to explain why layering images, dynamic mobile design and other sought-after design touches are tough to come by.

But now, I’m excited to see what Fluid Engine unlocks in our team’s own creativity as well as for our client’s web design projects!”

Kelsey Gilbert-Kreiling, co-founder and lead developer

“Flexibility. Being able to break out of the 12 grid gives us the capability of more artistic design without all of the custom code. The ability to be more intentional will ultimately lead to faster building of custom sites and more flexible editing for our clients — we can say so long to the days of moving something with CSS and locking the client into its placement forever.

Ultimately, Fluid Engine provides more accessible custom sites while maintaining the client-friendly backend we love so much.”

“Squarespace Fluid Engine really is the key to web design freedom. That pixel-perfect design only previously attainable with code and testing can now be achieved with a click of a mouse. You can drag a classic Squarespace element anywhere on the page and create a world all your own. The grid alignments will please your perfectionist side, while the ability to overlay elements and add animation will take your site to another creative level.

My advice is to wireframe your site and create a plan before jumping in, because you really have unlimited possibilities now. Happy creating!”

Kishya Greer, developer

“FE is exciting because it’s allowing Squarespace developers and designers to view the platform in an entirely new way. I’ve found people are a bit scared of the new layout — understandably so — but giving the platform a chance is the best way to get better technically and creatively.

Since the launch of FE, I’ve been really able to dive into inspiration I’ve left on the back-burner due to time constraints (WOTW does an expedited timeline elegantly), and now I can tap into some sites I had previously reserved strictly for aspiration. The possibilities are really endless and overall the technology makes me excited about the future of the platform and the caliber of sites to come out of it.”
