One Week Later: BāKIT Box
This sweet duo’s all-in-one kits ensure everyone — and they mean everyone — can become a baker.
Who are the brains behind your organization?
BāKIT Box is led by Carla Medina Jacobson and Shelley Gupta, two female minority entrepreneurs who are also best friends.
Where are you located?
The Chicagoland area.
What’s your mission?
BāKIT Box’s mission is to make baking easy, fun, and accessible for all ages and experience levels. Baking can be intimidating and we understand how challenging it can feel. We want our customers to feel confident in their abilities, and we do this by breaking down the recipe into simple easy steps.
Tell us your origin story.
BāKIT Box was founded in November 2020. Both of us were inspired by our own experimentation in the kitchen during the pandemic year. While experimenting with different recipes, we realized a few things:
— Researching recipes can be daunting. There are so many recipes and variations of recipes out there, and navigating the web is extremely time-consuming.
— Creating delicious baked goods at home usually requires very small quantities of many different ingredients. We found that a lot of product was being thrown out or wasted.
— Finding diverse recipes and specialty products is challenging.
All of these gaps led to the creation of BāKIT Box.
Zucchini sweet potato bread, before.
Zucchini sweet potato bread, after.
Three words to describe your team?
Creative, ambitious, and badass.
Workplace/workspace/office essentials?
Baking essentials, snacks, comfy couches, and (one day) a Peloton!
Best source of creative inspiration?
Our own cultural upbringings and ‘The Great British Bake Off.’
What would people be surprised to know about your organization?
Neither of us have culinary expertise — and that is why BāKIT Box works. We are not professional bakers, and we don’t expect our customers to be either. If we can do it, so can you!
Why did you opt for a WOTW Plus site?
We were looking for advanced e-commerce functionality, payment integrations, and email marketing capabilities.
What are your favorite features of your WOTW site?
We love the small details that our designers focused on. Every color on our style guide is incorporated in some small way. We also love all the little icons that allow you to understand how our business model works.
BāKIT Box’s hot cross buns.
What was your favorite part of working with the WOTW team?
We had the pleasure of working with two strong, amazing women. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting during meetings. They understood our needs immediately and had solutions to every idea that we threw their way.
Where can people find you?
Our website is www.bakitbox.com. We’re also on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Tik Tok.
What are you hoping for in 2021?
We hope to create a community of bakers to share creations, challenges, and ideas! We also hope to expand outside of Chicago and serve bakers and aspiring bakers across the US.
