Developing Story: Attalie Dexter

From bytes to bites, here’s what makes our developers tick.

Name: Attalie Dexter

Current residence: Los Angeles. I live in Silverlake with my husband, two cats and a lot of plants.

How did you get into web developing?

I had my first taste of programming as a teen, and then my college degree (Multimedia Arts) focused on design and web development. I created internal communication websites for large corporations for several years, then took a break when my home and accessory line started gaining traction. I’ve been reinvigorated with web development since then, now with my entrepreneurial learnings. I LOVE working with small businesses and helping to make their website and all things related less intimidating.

Favorite WOTW site you’ve designed and why?

I am usually so excited about whatever I just finished or am working on, so I would say the most recent is always a fave! Currently it’s Inside/Out Immersion.

Where do you work best?

I like to change my environment during the day and often follow the best light. I usually start the day in my backyard, then move inside to a cafe table in a sunny spot. I share an office with my partner, and I’ll go in the afternoon/evening or when I really want to focus. I love working with friends and having an impromptu brainstorming sesh at a coffee shop as well.

Workspace essentials?

Tons of beverages: matcha, sparkling water, herbal teas, and a water bottle. I listen to podcasts or biennial beats, depending on what I’m doing. I love the Plant People Stay Sharp capsules. I have to have my Rhodia notebook by my side for meetings and idea sketches.

Best learning resources?

Codepen and the SquareSpace forums.

Favorite Squarespace feature?

It’s very hard to pick just one, but I love the duplicate page feature. It can save valuable time if you plan it right.

My cat, Sebastian.

Best source of creative inspiration?

I collect art and design books of all types and will look through a stack when I’m feeling stagnant. Also, walks and nature — always!

Favorite shortcut or tip of the trade?

Figma (largely for the extension/plug-ins community) to create and export graphic elements. Coolors.co to visualize and easily share a color palette.

What are you binge-watching?

Most recently “Reservation Dogs.”

Favorite meal?

A mezze platter.

What are you hoping for in the near future?

New optimistic beginnings for all!
