Developing Story: Kishya Greer

From bytes to bites, here’s what makes our developers tick.

Name: Kishya Greer

Current residence: Deep in the Heart of Texas

How did you get into web developing?

Necessity. I needed a site to showcase my work. I wanted the best portfolio, so I had to learn some front-end coding. BTW, my first site sucked — but it was a starting point.

Favorite WOTW site you’ve designed and why?

That’s a tough one! StoutHeart tops the list because it is a perfect example of small branding decisions that go far. A solid warm color palette paired with warm photography makes this site inviting and polished. You don’t need much to make a great first impression. Each section has bite-sized pieces of content, and the consistent headers and icons in the right palette are just the icing on the cake.

Where do you work best?

I don’t think I have a spot, but I do have a setup. Headphones in and a podcast going or music blasting. I zone out and get so much work done.

Workspace essentials?

A comfy seat, a full battery on my laptop, and my pet bunny Ruth (pictured left) nearby.

Best learning resources?

Google is a goldmine. Searches can turn up lots of blogs focusing on specific problems. Squarespace forums are a wealth of knowledge as well. It’s such a great community to be apart of.

Favorite Squarespace feature?

It has to be the analytics. The amount of detail you get here really should inform what is working and what isn’t. You could literally set up a simple landing page and see how many visitors, in what state, what browser, where they came from — it’s all in the analytics. It’s a pretty cool feature. I recommend looking at them before making huge changes to your site, or if you want to up your Google keyword/SEO game.

Best source of creative inspiration?

Dribbble has so much great work. You cannot help but be inspired by looking at all the creative posts.

Favorite shortcut or tip of the trade?

Don’t forget to add alt text to images. Adding more keywords anywhere you can always help with SEO. Most importantly, it increases accessibility for visitors. Help screen readers!

What are you binge-watching?

Kid Cosmic’ and ‘Dickinson.’

Favorite meal?

Pad Kee Mow or Pad See Ew with tofu. End it all with mango sticky rice and I am in heaven!

What are you hoping for in 2021?

I hope my family is safe throughout the entire thing so we have another year to be together. I hope the same for your family as well.
